Mario and Luigi were on a trip to Thailand. Mario had 20 dollars, while Luigi had 8 dollars. Mario was on a four-day stay, but Luigi on the other hand was only on a two-day stay. Mario was pick-pocketed each single day he stayed in Thailand. Luigi also was pick-pocketed each single day he stayed in Thailand. Later a police investigation showed that the amount of money they were pick-pocketed each day were the same. Mario and Luigi met up back at Italy to compare how much money they had left in their wallets, and when they did, it showed that Luigi had 1/4 the amount of money that Mario had. How much did Luigi have originally before this trip?
1) Does the story fit with the equation? Is it functional? Would you actually write this equation from this word story problem? The story fits with the equation but it is not functional. I wouldn’t write this equation from this word story problem.
2) Does it make sense, or is it a little confusing? Discuss what is not clear, and suggest improvements. Some information seem to be mixed up and are unclear. At first, it says that the variable represents the number of days they stayed in the hotel, but later it says that it is the number of times they were pick-pocketed. Also, Mario’s and Luigi’s total amount must be the same, not the pick-pocketed amount because -2a does not equal -4a. It could be improved by changing the mistakes above.
3) Are there any grammatical mistakes? How should they be corrected? There were no grammatical mistakes.
4) Is the story creative? How could it be made better? The story is creative. However, it could be made better by correcting the mistakes that we listed.
What are the positive points about the word problem? It is unique that they thought of pick-pocketing for negative variable. Also, we liked the characters Mario and Luigi.
